Leadership Traits

The term leadership has championed many definitions over the years. Most center on creating vision, instilling confidence and setting direction for others to follow. Often, the term is set apart from management as a level somewhat above those who are involved in the day-to-day operational duties of directing others.

However, leadership is not about being more important than others. Leadership isn’t even about being in front of the pack or on top of the organizational chart. True leadership is more about the five following traits.

1.       Leaders serve others. They help others. Leaders know that if they help enough other people get what they want, everyone will be better off. It is about giving instead of taking.

2.       Leaders look forward. They realize that the past is over and the present contains the tools of the future.

3.       Leaders take risks. They realize that old ways need to make way for new ways. They understand that change is a catalyst for progress and risk is a gift for those willing to take it.

4.       Leaders use silence. They realize that the power of silence, reflection and the art of listening to others leads to better decisions. Silence creates thought. Thought creates new ideas.

5.       Leaders act. They understand that to have all the potential in the world is worth nothing, unless there is accomplishment. Achievement requires action.

Leadership is a mindset. It is not a title.  So this week, try each of these special leadership traits. The results will be good for you and those who work with you.

“You can’t imagine how stupid the whole world has grown nowadays.”
