Personal Choice
We often look at “skill” as the final component to an apprenticeship. Some see skill as a right of passage or a notable point reached after significant practice. Others see skill as a talent, often genetically programmed. A skilled surgeon or a skilled carpenter is appreciated and revered by those of us who will never reach their level of expertise. We even address groups of people using this concept such as, skilled trade or skilled positions on a team.
It is worth considering that skill is much more than a result. It is more like a never-ending process that is enhanced with practice and supported by experience.
Skill is not a noun with a stationary point. It is constantly moving and is constantly demanding our attention. Because as time goes by, we all are getting either better faster in our skills or we are getting worse faster. With practice and experience we will move forward. If we don’t practice and seek experience, we will move backward.
And the direction is always a personal choice.
